MR. REUSCH

(CAPTAIN DERIVATIVE) BIO

AP Calculus Teacher

I retired in 2020 for safety reasons after teaching AP Calculus A/B, AP Calculus B/C and most of Calculus III at Rockford Public Schools in Michigan. Because I loved my job so much, I had planned on continuing teaching for as many years as I was physically able. I decided that in retirement I would try to continue to teach classes, especially to students who had no teacher to help them along in their pursuit of Calculus knowledge. The first step was to make videos of my lectures for You Tube so that it wasn’t necessary to be in a classroom. I have now started virtual classes as well as private tutoring. Because of the stress that Covid has placed on finances, I am offering everything this first year at no cost. In future years, I may have to alter this plan, but I hope to always keep my service affordable (and to always offer for free to those who have a real financial need, and a desire to learn).

The best way to decide if you want to work with me is to watch several of my videos. I have made them without editing and almost always done in one take. They are not slick! My attempt is to make it seem like a real classroom including the things that don’t go just perfectly. I obviously don’t leave in any mistakes that could confuse the learning process. I‘ve been doing this long enough that I have received some nice awards, and I feel very fortunate that I have saved hundreds of beautiful notes written by students. I feel these are personal, and I’ve chosen not to share any of them. Basically, I am no great gift to the world of math. What I am is someone who loves Calculus and has worked very hard for 21 years trying to improve each year in my knowledge of this beautiful subject. I also have a good work ethic, and I will put my utmost into helping my students learn and succeed. Nearly 1500 of my students received the highest score (5) on their AP Exam and only about 2% did not pass. They deserve most of the credit (as they had to take the Exam), but it at least gives you an idea that I can team up with hard working students and achieve success.

Once a year in my class, a mysterious visitor appeared. This "Captain Derivative" was so well liked by students that he became my alter-ego. I will try to live up to his standards on this website.
